Submission and Manuscript Requirements:

Queries by post or email. If sent by postal mail, query letters should be no more than two pages long; if you can do it in one, so much the better.  Please include a separate, but brief, professional bio if in hardcopy, or add on to one email query.  If we like what we see or think it has possibilities, we will ask you to send the first and last chapters, including a synopsis by email attachment (preferred) or by post with SASE.

Partial and complete manuscripts should be formatted in MS Word (or compatible) in Times New Roman 12 or Garamond 12.  Chapter or poem titles should be 14 point font and in bold.

Non-fiction and fiction are double-spaced, with no page break inserts.

Poetry is single-spaced, except where double-spacing is necessary in the context of one or more poems.  Whenever poems are longer than one page, include “Poem continues …” in 12 point font at bottom right of the page and “(Title of poem” continued” in bold and 12 font at the top left of the following page.  Do not use the quote marks.  Example: the poem ‘Joe Schmoe Tells a Story’ goes onto a second page.  At the bottom right, include Poem continues …, and at the top left of the next page append Joe Schmoe Tells a Story, continued.  Use the same pattern if poems exceed two pages.

Manuscripts must be edited by credible outside sources at least twice before submission.  If we receive a MS that does not read as an already-finished product, we will send it back and tell you why.  Note, however, the comments under editing: if the submission exhibits good – and marketable – content, we will work with you as needed.  Note, too, that professional fees do apply for this service.

Authors must obtain all applicable permissions for quoted and copyrighted material used.

Dissertations: Authors are responsible for the correct citation style(s) before submitting a MS.

No simultaneous submissions.

Authors must note their own previously-published material in an Acknowledgments section.

Tips: Limit the use of exclamation marks, semi-colons and ellipses.  Semi-colons should not be used in fiction (as a wise mentor once remarked, “We don’t speak in semi-colons, and we can’t see them, so there’s no need for them in fiction.), so please remove and rework before submitting.  In any prose genre, work hard on the first paragraph and the ‘hook’ that grabs the reader, and make sure the ending ‘satisfies’ the beginning.
